Philadelphia Flyers Prospect Update

It’s hockey season! The Philadelphia Flyers season opener is upon us, and Flyers prospects around the globe are kicking off their 2017-18 campaigns. Let’s take a look at how all these youngsters have fared early on with their respective teams.

Canadian Hockey League (CHL)

Pascal Laberge

Age: 19

Team: Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)

Position: C/RW

2017-18 Stats: 4GP, 2G, 1A, 3P, +2

Laberge, coming off a rough season, is off to a good start. The 19-year old has been used primarily at center so far and has won roughly 48% of his draws.  His Victoriaville Tigres are a perfect 4-0-0 to begin the 2017-18 season.

German Rubtsov

Age: 19

Team: Chicoutimi Saguenéens

Position: C/LW

2017-18 Stats: N/A

The Flyers’ 2016 first round pick is facing yet another obstacle in his development. Rubtsov has yet to play a regular season game for Chicoutimi this season after being sent down from Philadelphia. He is currently dealing with paperwork issues between the Flyers and Saguenéens. Rubtsov likely makes his season debut on October 6th against Pascal Laberge and the Tigres.

Morgan Frost

Age: 18

Team: Soo Greyhounds (OHL)

Position: C

2017-18 Stats: 5GP, 1G, 4A, 5P, +5

Morgan Frost has been dynamite early on for the Soo Greyhounds, notching 5 points in his first five games. Frost has gone 50% (46/92) on the faceoff dot early on. The 5-foot-11 center scored on this penalty shot for his first goal of the season:

Isaac Ratcliffe

Age: 18

League: OHL

Team: Guelph Storm (OHL)

Position: LW

2017-18 Stats: 4GP, 2G, 1A, 3P, -3

After two pointless games to start his season, Ratcliffe has heated up recently, scoring three points in his last two games. His Guelph Storm own a 2-1-1 record early on.

Matthew Strome

Age:  18

Team: Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL)

Position: LW

2017-18 Stats: 4GP, 2G, 1A, 3P, +1

Strome is currently riding a three-game point streak as his Hamilton Bulldogs sit fifth in the OHL’s Eastern Conference with a 2-1-1 record.

Maksim Sushko

Age: 18

Team: Owen Sound Attack (OHL)

Position: RW/LW

2017-18 Stats: 3GP, 1G, 1A, 2P, -3

Like many other Flyers’ prospects, Sushko is off to a good start, recording two points in his first three games. His Owen Sound Attack are expected to be a powerhouse in the OHL this season. They currently boast a 2-0-1 record.

Connor Bunnaman

Age: 19

Team: Kitchener Rangers (OHL)

Position: C/LW

2017-18 Stats: 3GP, 0G, 1A, 1P, +3

Connor Bunnaman was named captain of the Kitchener Rangers prior to the start of the regular season. The 19-year old has missed the last two games for Kitchener with the flu.

Anthony Salinitri

Age: 19

Team: Sarnia Sting (OHL)

Position: C/RW

2017-18 Stats: 4GP, 1G, 5A, 6P, +1

Salinitri might be a sleeper prospect to keep an eye on this season. The 2016 sixth-round pick is off to a scorching start, recording six points in his first four games, including five points in his last two games.

Carsen Twarynski

Age: 19

Team: Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

Position: LW

2017-18 Stats: N/A

Twarynski had the opportunity to play in the AHL this season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, but was re-assigned to the WHL on October 1st. The big power forward will likely make his season debut with Kelowna on October 4th against the Victoria Royals.

Carter Hart

Age: 19

Team: Everett Silvertips (WHL)

Position: G

2017-18 Stats: 2GP, 3.70GAA, .905 SV%

Hart has appeared in two games thus far for the Everett Silvertips, including a 35-save victory in his season debut. The 6-foot-2 netminder is expected to face a lot more shots this season compared to last.

NCAA/College

Cooper Marody

Age: 20

Team: University of Michigan

Position: C/RW

2017-18 Stats: N/A

Marody seemingly gets forgotten by Flyers fans. He notched 4 points in a 10-1 exhibition rout of Western Ontario this past weekend. Michigan’s season gets underway on October 6th.

Brendan Warren

Age: 20

Team: University of Michigan

Position: LW

2017-18 Stats: N/A

Warren is hoping to produce more offense in his junior season. Acquired by the Flyers in the trade that sent Nick Cousins to Arizona, Warren might end up being linemates with Cooper Marody as some point during the season.

Wade Allison

Age: 19

Team: Western Michigan University

Position: RW

2017-18 Stats: N/A

Allison did not dress in Western Michigan’s only pre-season game. The 6-foot-2 winger will get his season underway on October 6th when WMU faces off against Ferris State.

Tanner Laczynski

Age: 20

Team: Ohio State

Position: C/RW

2017-18 Stats: N/A

Laczynski appeared in one pre-season game for Ohio State, where he scored one goal. Ohio State begins their 2017-18 campaign against fellow Flyers prospect Wyatt Kalynuk and Wisconsin on October 6th.

Terrance Amorosa

Age: 22

Team: Clarkson University

Position: LHD

2017-18 Stats: N/A

Amorosa will need to have a fantastic senior year if he hopes to get signed by the Flyers after this season. He tallied 1 assist in a 3-3 exhibition tie this past weekend. Amorosa will get his 2017-18 regular season underway on Friday against Penn State.

David Drake

Age: 22

Team: University of Connecticut

Position: LHD

2017-18 Stats: N/A

Like Amorosa, Drake is entering his senior year of college and will need to show significant steps in development in hopes of earning a contract after the season’s end. Connecticut plays a pair of games against Maine to open up their season.

Wyatt Kalynuk

Age: 20

Team: University of Connecticut

Position:

2017-18 Stats: N/A

A seventh-round pick in last year’s draft, Kalynuk is entering his freshman season with Wisconsin as a 20-year old. They’ll host a couple of games against Tanner Laczynski and Ohio State to get the 2017-18 campaign underway.

United States Hockey League (USHL)

Noah Cates

Age: 18

Team: Omaha Lancers

Position: LW/RW

2017-18 Pre-Season Stats: 7GP, 1G, 3A, 4P, -6

Noah Cates recorded 4 points and 18 shots on goal in seven USHL pre-season games for the Omaha Lancers. Omaha gets their season started on October 6th when they host the Tri-City Storm.

Matej Tomek

Age: 20

Team: Waterloo Blackhawks

Position: G

2017-18 Pre-Season Stats: 5GP, 1.98GAA, .916SV%, 1SO

Tomek has already appeared in more than twice as many USHL pre-season games than he did in his entire two-year career at the University of North Dakota. He’ll be the clear-cut No.1 goalie for Waterloo, who get their regular season underway on October 7th.

Sweden

David Kaše

Age: 20

Team: Mora IK (SHL)

Position: RW

2017-18 Stats: 5GP, 2G, 2A, 5P, -1

David Kaše has impressed early on in his SHL career. He plays in a top-6 role for Mora IK and has been productive offensively, registering 4 points in his first five games. It will be difficult for Kaše to keep up that pace playing on a bottom-feeder like Mora IK.

Olle Lycksell

Age: 18

Team: Linköping J20 (SuperElit)

Position: C/RW

2017-18 Stats: 7GP, 1G, 4A, 5P, +1

Olle Lycksell, a sixth-round pick in last June’s NHL draft, has tallied five points in seven games at the J20 level in Sweden – an immense improvement from last season where he recorded just 9 points in 29 games at the same level.

Linus Högberg

Age: 19

Team: Växjö Lakers (SHL)

Position: LHD

2017-18 Stats: 5GP, 0G, 1A, 1P, +1 (SHL)

4GP, 0G, 0A, 0P, -2 (Champions Hockey League)

Högberg has already solidified himself as a regular SHL defenceman. The hope is that this steady 6-foot-1 defenceman sees more and more ice time as the season moves along.

David Bernhardt

Age: 19

Team: Djurgården IF (SHL)

Position: LHD

2017-18 Stats: 5GP, 0G, 0A, 0P, +0

Bernhardt is off to a relatively quiet start offensively. Similarly to Högberg, Bernhardt will look to receive more ice time later in the season with Djurgården IF.

Felix Sandström

Age: 20

Team: Brynäs IF

Position: G

2017-18 Stats: 3GP, 2.36GAA, .926SV% (SHL)

2GP, 2.00GAA, .943sv% (Champions Hockey League)

With the way Felix Sandström has been playing so far this season, it will not be surprising if he takes over as Brynäs’ No.1 goalie by the end of the season. It’s still early, Sandström has outplayed veteran goalie David Rautio by quite a large margin.

Russia

Kirill Ustimenko

Age: 18

Team: MHK Dinamo St.Petersburg (MHL)

Position: G

2017-18 Stats: 7GP, 2.25GAA, .894SV%

Ustimenko, a native of Belarus, has started seven of his side’s 12 games so far this season. He has posted decent numbers for one of the better teams in the MHL (Russian Juniors).

Ivan Fedotov

Age: 20

Team: Toros Neftekamsk (VHL)

Position: G

2017-18 Stats: 6GP, 2.63GAA, .891SV%

Ivan Fedotov, a seventh-round pick back in 2015, will likely stay in the VHL for the season’s entirety. The towering 6-foot-7 netminder needs to have better outings in order to earn more starts for Toros.
