Philly is Reviews: Game 40- The Bullies Return

By: Dan Esche (@DanTheFlyeraFan)

The Flyers stay in Philadelphia looking to redeem themselves after an embarrassing loss to the Penguins just two days earlier. Though Tyrell Goulbourne was recalled, he is not in the game.

First period: The Flyers started the game off with multiple good chances from Hagg, Laughton, and Konecny. Seidenberg went to the box for a hook on Weal. Couturier redirects Gostisbehere’s point shot to give the Flyers the lead. Konecny dropped the gloves with Prince and won the fight. Clutterbuck ties it up for the Islanders after redirecting a Nick Leddy shot.

Second period: Just 1:36 in to the second period Raffl gets a stick on a Provorov blast to give the Flyers the lead. Simmonds piled on with a goal just 40 seconds later. Fritz took a double minor for a high stick on MacDonald. This time Provorov got a goal on the powerplay after a beautiful no-look pass from Patrick. The Flyers did not score on the second powerplay.

Clutterbuck picked up his secondĀ goal of the game after stuffing home a rebound. Konecny answers for the Flyers with a goal on a breakaway courtesy of a great life pass by Couturier, giving the Flyers a 5-2 lead heading into intermission.

Third period: Tavares opened the scoring with a powerplay goal thanks to a Laughton hook. Pulock managed to add another goal for the Isles. Couturier fought Bailey late in the third, that is also Couturier’s first career Gordie Howe hat trick. An empty net for the Isles left the Flyers pinned in their own zone until Ladd took a tripping penalty. Provorov would end the game with an empty-netter, securing a 6-4 Flyers win.

Takeaways: A team that was stomped by the Penguins a couple lays ago came out swinging, both literally and figuratively. They sat on a three goal lead in the third period and the Islanders came close to erasing that deficit. If the Flyers can play like this more often, they have a chance to salvage the season.
