The Flyers head to MSG on a four-game win streak. The Rangers are notoriously tough opponents for Philly, and beating them is an important step in gaining a playoff spot.
First period: The game opened with a Flyers goal just 2:06 into the game. Weal deflected a Gudas point shot that made its way past Lundqvist. The Flyers dominated the play for much of the period, but a series of mistakes led to their early undoing. Nash received a breakaway pass from Buchnevich and blew past Manning and Gudas for his first goal in 12 games.
Filppula went to the box for interference, and Miller capitalized redirecting a shot from McDonagh. Fast was called for slashing Voracek, but it was the Rangers who capitalized as Carey scored a shorthanded goal on the breakaway with ten seconds left in the period.
Second period: The Rangers killed the last five seconds of the Flyers powerplay to start the period. Philly had some jump in their step as they applied heavy pressure on Lundqvist out of the gate. As Voracek left the box as his hooking penalty expired, Grabner stole the puck and scored on the Rangers third breakaway of the night. Nash scored his second of the night with a laser off of another turnover. Fast took a late high-sticking call.
Third period: Rangers killed off the last 33 seconds of the Flyers powerplay. A lackluster period for both teams as the Rangers just played to hold the win.
Takeaways: When it rains, it pours. the Flyers play wasn’t awful, but they committed just about every mistake possible. hopefully this is an isolated incident and they get back on course in the next game.
