The Flyers look to extend their win streak to five games as the NHL’s best team Tampa Bay Lightning come to town. Philly stunned the Bolts just a few weeks ago with a surprising victory in Tampa in arguably their best game of the season. The Flyers hope to replicate those results heading into the All-Star Break.
First period: The Flyers held their own in the first period, testing Vasilevskiy early, and limiting the Bolts to just three shots on goal. This is the last positive thing I’ll say about the Flyers tonight.
Second period: The Bolts open the scoring just 25 seconds into the period as Point scored as the Bolts powerplay expired. The Lightning started to take over and they scored again as Gourde buried a puck after a defensive breakdown in front of the net. The Flyers went to the powerplay thanks to a Girardi went to the box for cross-checking. Soon after Ghost turned the puck over at the point and Callahan danced around both Gostisbehere and Neuvirth for a shorthanded goal.
Third period: Namestnikov took an interference penalty and the Flyers pulled Neuvirth with 7:20 left and Konecny capitalized on the six-on-four as the Flyers tried to mount a comeback. Namestnikov killed the comeback effort less than a minute later to increase the Bolts lead to 3. Namestnikov buried one last goal with less than three minutes left in the game to give the bolts the win.
Takeaways: The Flyers ran into the NHL’s best team and crumbled. Frankly, they haven’t looked good for a few games, but they couldn’t hide the lackluster effort tonight. Konecny continues to be one of the lone bright spots on the team as his ongoing offensive support is keeping the Flyers alive. Neither Provorov nor Ghost looked particularly strong tonight, especially Ghost, who had yet another turnover on the powerplay lead to a goal. The All-Star break comes at a good time for the Flyers, as they could use a reset and try to get back on track.
