Flyers hockey: The only thing happening in Philly sports today…

Kidding, of course. The Flyers would love to emulate their friends across the street and have a parade down Broad Street themselves. The first step towards that would be making the playoffs. As of the start of the game, the Flyers were sitting in the first wild card spot, just one point ahead of Columbus and the Islanders, and just three points behind the third place Devils in the division.

First Period: Both power play units got good looks on an early man advantage, but the Flyers weren’t able to capitalize for the ninth straight time. Immediately after the Habs killed their penalty, Giroux went to the box for interference. The goaltending was the mutual star of the first period, as neither team could capitalize on multiple opportunities.

Second Period: Konecny scored just 42 seconds into the game off a tic-tac-toe play with Giroux and Couturier, to get the Flyers on the board first. It’s his sixth goal in nine games. Half way through the period, Lehkonen scored a short handed goal on an ugly Voracek turnover at center ice. It was the ninth short handed goal allowed by the Flyers so far this season. Less than thirty seconds later, Giroux scored on a laser shot from his favorite spot on the power play. The Habs evened the score with 1:11 left in the period, an inevitable goal as the Flyers completely lost control of the pace of the game.

Third Period: Voracek took advantage of Plekanec’s third penalty of the night just 27 seconds into the period, a bar-down shot off a cross-ice pass from Giroux. Konecny scored a minute later, following up on a Gostisbehere shot that snuck past Price. Gallagher cut the Flyers lead to one thanks to a combination of a power play and an empty net, tipping a pass past Elliott during the 6-on-4. Provorov nailed the full-ice empty netter from below the goal line to put the icing on the cake.

Takeaways: The Flyers capitalized where the Habs weren’t able to, and earned themselves two points. Elliott came up big when he needed to, but it was the offensive prowess of Konecny (2 goals), Giroux (1 goal, 2 assists) and Gostisbehere (3 assists) that made the difference. The Flyers also got help tonight from Calgary, who beat the Devils, and Buffalo, who beat the Islanders.
