The Flyers head to Vegas for the first time just one day after they beat the Coyotes in a shootout. Brian Elliott went down with an injury during the shootout in Arizona, so it will be up to Neuvirth to hold down the fort versus the strong Golden Knights offense.
First period: The first period opened with good chances for both teams as Patrick had a solid chance in front of Fleury, while Neuvirth denied Karlsson at the other end. McNabb scored from the point thanks to some nifty passing. The Flyers answered late in the period as Couturier finished of a tic-tac-toe play courtesy of a great play by Konency.
Second period: Couturier and Giroux opened the period with a good opportunity, that was pretty much the last chance the Flyers would have for much of the period. Vegas took control of the game for much of the period, but other than some scattered chances, and despite a 14-3 shot advantage, they failed to have any solid scoring chances.
The Flyers would go on to bury two goals in just under three minutes. First, MacDonald finished off another tic-tac-toe play after the puck bounced in off of his foot. Then with 5.8 seconds left Giroux with one hand on his stick tips the puck past Fleury for the 3-2 lead.
Third period: Much like the last period, the Golden Knights controlled the game, as the Flyers went to their patented defend the lead defense. They weathered the storm as Neuvirth stood on his head throughout the period, recording 39 saves. Gudas sealed the victory with 2:26 left on the period on an empty net goal.
Takeaways: Wasn’t pretty, but I’ll take it. Something seemed off about Vegas tonight, they dominated most of the game, but never saw too many quality chances. It’s still the same issue for the Flyers, bad turnovers. The refs didn’t interfere in this game too much, so the Flyers special teams didn’t have a chance to blow it.
