Philly is Reviews: Game 58- The End of the Columbus Curse

By: Dan Esche (@DanTheFlyeraFan)

The Flyers head to Columbus to face another Metropolitan division rival after taking yet another heartbreaking loss to the Devils three days ago. While it’s been 12 years since the Flyers won in Columbus, tonight would be a good night to break that streak so the Flyers can hang onto second place in the division.

First period: It was a wide open period as neither team took a penalty. The real battle was between the goaltenders as they exchanged incredible saves. While the Flyers looked like the better team overall, the goalies kept it tied at 0.

Second period: The first half of the period was much of the same, a duel between Neuvirth and Bobrovsky. A scary incident occurred when Couturier had an awkward play in the corner and immediately went down the tunnel. He returned to the game a couple of minutes later and after a replay it appears he got kicked in the crotch.

Simmonds was the one to break the silence as he potted his 20th goal of the season deflecting a Gostisbehere point shot. Neuvirth stayed perfect through 40 minutes as he stopped all 23 shots he faced.

Third period: The back and fourth game continued into the third as the Flyers struggled to maintain the lead. The Flyers failed to capitalize on a too many men call against the Blue Jackets, which lead to Columbus applying more pressure tie it up. Atkinson scored on an innocent backhand rebound with just over three minutes left in the period.

Overtime: It was all Flyers in overtime as they outworked the Blue Jackets and 1:52 into the overtime period Couturier buried the game winner past Bobrovsky, ending the Flyers 12-year losing streak in Columbus.

Takeaways: This was one of the more interesting games the Flyers have played recently. They had a strong showing that was snuffed out by Bobrovsky. Overall, a strong effort like this could make the difference against many other teams with lesser goalies.
