Philly is Reviews: Game 78- Now You See Him… Now You Don’t

The Flyers travel to the Mile High City for their second game of their back-to-back. After only securing one point vs Dallas last night, this becomes another high pressure game as both the Flyers and Avalanche continue to push for playoff spots.

First period: The Avalanche came out hot lead by Nathan MacKinnon who turned Giroux inside out early. While the Avs had the majority of the puck possession, it was Giroux who scored first with an absolute cannon from the circle thanks to a phenomenal pass from Gostisbehere. The Avs kept on the attack, but again it was the Flyers who scored. Provorov scored on a great point shot thanks to a great play by Weal to get the puck to him. A late penalty from Couturier gave the Avalanche 1:30 of powerplay time to open the second period.

Second period: The Flyers killed the rest of the hangover penalty. Nieto would get the Avalanche on the board after hammering home a rebound. Neuvirth would make a highlight reel save on Rantanen, but would leave the game during the next tv timeout. Mrazek stopped all five shots he faced in relieve during the period. The game slowed but both teams spent long stretches in the others zone, but there weren’t a whole lot of chances.

Third period: The Avalanche didn’t capitalize on a Gudas hooking penalty to start the period, and would kill off a Soderberg penalty right after. The Flyers spent most of the beginning of the third period in the Avs zone, but Colorado got desperate and spent just about all o the last five minutes in the Flyers zone. Somehow the guys in orange and black hung on and beat the Avalanche 2-1.

Takeaways: Where to begin with this one. Neuvy looked good, but got hurt somewhere. It’s unfortunate as he could have come back and been the hero of the day for the stretch run. The Flyers had one of their more complete efforts of late in this game. They should have put more pressure on Hammond, but they gutted out a win. Take the W and move on to Boston.
