The Flyers continue to try to lock up a playoff berth as they path to the playoffs goes through Long Island. The Flyers will look to keep the momentum going after an OT win versus the Bruins on Sunday as they look to earn two more points and finally clinch a spot in the playoffs.
First period: The period started with the Flyers controlling much of the early game, but Tavares would make quick work of a Couturier trip and give the Isles a 1-0 lead. While the Flyers had a lot of offenseive zone time the rest of the period, most of it was non-threatning. With less than a minute left Lindblom made a great breakout pass to Patrick who then had a beauty of a backhand pass to Simmonds who buried his 24th of the season to tie the game.
Second period: Voracek took an early high-sticking penalty, and while the Isles didn’t score, Beauvillier scored as the powerplay ended after they hemmed the Flyers in their zone. Tavares buried another one all alone after yet another intercepted cross ice pass. Barzal piled on the scoring with a laser of a shot after a horrible play by MacDonald. It was all Isles all period long.
Third period: Patrick scored two powerplay goals and Giroux tied it up in 13 minutes, but a Barzal goal less than 30 seconds after Giroux’s was enough for the Isles to hang on for the win.
Takeaways: Yikes. certainly not what we wanted to see with two games left in the season. They failed to clinch a playoff spot and have a great chance of facing the Bruins or Lightning. The comeback was inspiring, but it wasn’t enough.
