A quick check up on the metropolitan division after day one of Free Agency!

adds– James Van Riemsdyk  losses– Petr Mrazek, Val Filppula, Brandon Manning

Already a winning summer with Filppula and Manning moving on, Hextall took it one step further by bringing JVR back into town. With middle-six scoring being one of the Flyers biggest needs, JVR is a huge add.

adds– Eric Gryba losses– Michael Grabner, John Moore

Not much happened on the New Jersey front, as their only add thus far was depth defenseman Eric Gryba. They let both of their trade deadline acquisitions (Grabner, Patrick Maroon) walk, but with multiple kids ready to take the next step, they really didn’t need to add anyone.

adds– Vlad Namestnikov losses– Ondrej Pavelec

Rangers didn’t make much noise at all, only re-signing Namestnikov. Most of their free agents are restricted, and they’re in a rebuilding phase, so it was a quite day in New York.

adds– Valtteri Filppula, Leo Komarov losses– John Tavares

Sucks to be the Islanders. Losing a top player in the league for nothing, while not coming even close to signing his replacement. They did have a great draft and already have stud player Mathew Barzal, but losing Tavares was a huge blow to that franchise. They did re-sign defenseman Thomas Hickey.

adds Petr Mrazek losses– Cam Ward

After making a blockbuster trade a the entry draft, it seemed as though they would continue to add during free agency, but that wasn’t the case. Their only swap was in goal as Cam Ward, who spend 13 years with the organization, signed with the Blackhawks. So to counter that loss they signed former Flyer Petr Mrazek to a one-year deal. Mrazek floundered in Philly, but has shown the potential to be a starter in Detroit, so time will tell which version of Petr shows up in Carolina.

adds– Jack Johnson, Matt Cullen losses– Josh Jooris

The Penguins are still trying to keep their Cup window open, so they felt they needed to add declining defenseman Jack Johnson to the fold. Matt Cullen, the 41-year-old forward heading into his 20th NHL season returned to Pittsburgh after spending last season with the Wild.

adds– Nic Dowd losses– Jay Beagle

The reigning Stanley Cup champs don’t have a ton of money to play with, so they stayed quite. They lost Beagle to Vancouver, but brought in Dowd to offset his loss.

Blue Jackets

adds- Riley Nash losses– Jack Johnson, Tomas Vanek

The Jackets had an interesting free agency, letting two veteran players walk, but signing some forward depth. Columbus is still a fairly strong team overall, so they didn’t need to add much.
