Flyers Beat Hurricanes 4-1

Three goals in the third period lifted the Flyers to a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night in Philadelphia. Carter Hart made 33 saves on 34 shots en route to his fourth win of the season.

The Flyers got the scoring started early in the first as Sean Couturier redirected a perfect Matt Niskanen pass into the goal on the power play. Niskanen and Shayne Gostisbehere got the assists. The Hurricanes tied the score just over six minutes into the second period as Lucas Wallmark tapped in Trevor van Riemsdyk’s pass into a wide-open net. Martin Necas also picked up an assist on the goal.

Travis Konecny broke the tie for good just over a minute into the third period as he followed up on a Niskanen shot from the point that rebounded directly to his stick in front of the net. Oskar Lindblom provided a screen on Hurricanes goaltender Petr Mrazek on the play and also picked up an assist. Konecny now has seven goals on the season, tied with Lindblom for the team-lead.

Joel Farabee added a goal, the second legal goal of his career, with about seven minutes left to play. His own heads-up play in the defensive zone led to the offensive rush and, while his original shot was denied by Mrazek, his follow-up shot found the back of the net. There was concern that the Hurricanes would challenge the play, as James van Riemsdyk appeared to be offsides, but they did not. It would have been Farabee’s third goal called back on the season. van Riemsdyk and Claude Giroux tallied the assists.

It was the ninth time the van Riemsdyk brothers have faced off against each other in the NHL since Trevor joined the league in the 2014-15 season. Trevor holds the series advantage, with five wins against his older brother. With their respective assists, it was the first time both James and Trevor recorded points in the same game. In those nine games, Trevor has one assist while James has four goals and six assists.

Giroux sealed the win for the Flyers with a breakaway slap shot towards the end of regulation. It was Giroux’s fourth goal of the season. Tyler Pitlick and Phil Myers picked up the assists.

The three stars for the game were Travis Konecny (1), Joel Farabee (2) and Carter Hart (3). The Flyers are back in action on Thursday night as they take on the Montreal Canadiens in Philadelphia.
